Abstract

Introduction: Chondromalacia patellae is a condition characterized by softening and breakdown of cartilage on the posterior aspect of the patella, affecting both active young and older adults, and significantly reducing quality of life. Objective: To assess the importance of diagnosis and treatment of chondromalacia patellae. Design: Systematic review of studies between 2000 and 2023. Data source: PubMed. Study selection: Includes systematic reviews, clinical trials, cohort and case-control studies, excluding weak methodologies. Results: Biomechanical, anatomical and overload factors contribute to chondromalacia, with diagnosis based on clinical history, physical examination and imaging studies, such as MRI. Treatment includes physical therapy, medications, activity modifications and, in refractory cases, surgery. Conclusions: Early and multidisciplinary treatment improves outcomes, with identification of risk factors and patient education being crucial to prevent recurrences.
